The rooms we live in tend to be kept in a reasonable state, because we don’t want to be overwhelmed by mess. But occasionally we have to deal with a neglected room or an attic that needs to be completely redone. This isn’t just a case of giving the floor a quick vacuum. A room that has been neglected for years will need to have the floors scrubbed and the entire place disinfected.

Walls

Old rooms may smell musty because of mould. This is a health hazard, and needs to be addressed promptly.

If there is a leak in the wall or ceiling that is causing the mould, have it repaired before you do anything else.

Spray all the walls with a 50/50 vinegar water solution, and leave this for an hour. Then wash the walls with a cloth dipped in warm water and detergent. Wash the detergent away.

Wash the wall with sugar soap. And consider having the room repainted.

Floors

If the mould in the room is bad you may need to replace the carpet, including the underfelt. If there is no mould in the carpet then you might have it professionally steam cleaned.

Wooden floors can be washed clean. If there is mould use dishwashing liquid and warm water to mop the area clean. Use a scrubbing brush on any stubborn areas. Do not use vinegar as this can damage some types of wood and some types of wood finish.

It is possible to have the timber floor re-sanded. This gives great results, virtually a new floor, but it is an expensive procedure.

Curtains and blinds

At the very least curtains will need to be put through the wash. If there is any mould it is best to replace the curtains.

Blinds can usually be taken outside for a thorough cleaning. If they cannot be easily removed, wash them with vinegar and disinfectant.

Clean the windows with detergent and a rubber squeegee. Clean the frame and sill as well.

Other elements

Vacuum the light fittings and anything electrical.

An ozone generator is useful for cleaning a room. These produce ozone that suffocates anything living within an enclosed space. Seal the windows and doors and leave the ozone generator on for an hour (use an automatic timer). Wait a few hours (overnight) then let the room air out. Make sure there are no people or pets in the room when using the ozone generator.
