Tile Floor Cleaning Advice

Hard floors have their advantages. They are usually easy to sweep clean. And with hard tiles the floor is waterproof, so they are the best option for bathrooms and kitchens. But hard floors will occasionally need a more thorough cleaning. In the case of bathroom tiles, this may include the removal of soap scum.

Sweep the floor at least twice per week. Or vacuum with a soft brush attachment. This removes grit and dust from the floor surface. If you have soft tiles (i.e.: vinyl) that prevent scratching. Hard tiles tend to not scratch unless there is broken glass or porcelain on the floor.

A tiled floor should be mopped perhaps every week or two, depending on how many people use the room. This mopping should remove almost everything that the sweeping leaves behind. Always use a gently mopping solution on the floor. You might need to use bleach to spot-clean any stains.

There are alternatives to mopping

A steam mop uses no chemicals. Rather, the steam does a very thorough job of removing almost everything from the tiled floor. The lack of chemicals means no smell and no environmental damage.

A microfiber mop is also a good option. This ultra-fine material will remove even tiny contaminants like bacteria, so we can often forgo disinfectants and just use gentle cleaners.

Soap Scum Tiles

Some tiled floors seem to always stay dirty, no matter how much we clean. This is almost always a sigh of soap scum. The floor is dirty because it is sticky, causing dirt, dust and everything else to get stuck to the floor surface. Ironically, this stickiness is from soap or detergent, the very thing we use to clean the floor.

If your tiled floor is sticky, or just seems to attract dirt, we should clean the soap scum off the surface. This almost always removes the problem.

A solution of vinegar and water, mixed equally, will remove most soap scum. Spray this on the floor and leave it for half an hour. They mop the floor. If the soap scum persists, apply the vinegar solution again and scrum with a stiff bristle brush.

Vinegar and bicarb of soda will remove tough areas of soap scum on tiles. Commercial products like De-Solve-It are also useful.
