There have been many chemical cleaning products over the years that were used because they were effective. But at least some of these chemicals were quite toxic, at least when used long-term. The toxic effects were not noticed at first. It is best to avoid chemical cleaners if possible.

We can often find safe alternatives to chemical cleaners.

  • Baking Soda – A mixture of baking soda and a little water on a sponge is great for cleaning bench-tops, cabinets and other hard surfaces.
Add dry baking soda to the carpets, leave for an hour and vacuum. This is a great deodorizer.
  • Baking Soda and Toothpaste – Baking soda and toothpaste (use non-gel toothpaste) can clean many wooden surfaces.
  • Lemon Juice – This is great for dissolving grease or removing many types of mould. It also smells much better than chemical cleaners.
  • Essential oils – Add these to soapy water for a great smelling cleaner. Just find the oil you like best. Peppermint or lavender are popular choices.
  • Vinegar – this is good for mirrors, windows, glass or most hard surfaces.
  • Vinegar and baking Soda – The popular science experiment – of mixing baking soda and vinegar to produce a lot of bubbling foam. This is great for stubborn stains on hard surfaces. Or for laundry stains.
  • Castile Soap – Mix this with a little warm water for washing dishes.
  • Kosher salt and olive oil – Clean pot and pans with kosher salt and olive oil.
  • Hand Sanitizer – This removes many marks from walls or other hard surfaces.
  • De-solve-it – A commercial cleaner made from citrus juices (like oranges). This is great for removing sticky residue on many surfaces.
