Occasionally we get our business suit damaged by cooking grease, or the office furniture suffers a bad grease stain. These are unsightly and troublesome to remove. But by using the right technique for the appropriate fabric means that annoying type of stain will often be gone.

Washable Clothes
Avoid rubbing the stain, as this often pushes the grease further into the fibers. First lift as much of the surface grease off with a spoon or dull knife. Next, cover the stain with cornflour or Bi Carb of Soda, as this soaks up a lot of the grease. Leave this for 30 minutes.

When the flour or Bi Carb has done its work you can use a solvent stain remover. If you don’t have a solvent, then use some concentrated detergent. Scrub the area with an old toothbrush.

Leave the solvent on the stain for 30 minutes, then wash the garment in the hottest water permissible for that type of fabric.

Dry Clean Fabrics

Remove as much of the grease as possible with a dull knife or spoon, then put some cornflour or Bi Carb on the stain. Then take the garment to the dry cleaner and have them look after the problem. Be sure to point out the stain to them.

Carpet and Upholstery

Remove as much of the grease as possible with a dull knife or spoon, then sprinkle some cornflour or Bi Carb od Soda on the stain. Leave this on the stain for half an hour. Do not rub the stain in as this pushes the grease further into the fibers.

After half an hour vacuum up the flour or Bi Carb and then blot the area with a dry cleaning solvent. Use a white towel or cloth for the blotting to avoid staining the carpet. If you do not have a cleaning solvent then mix a tablespoon of ammonia with a tablespoon of dish detergent and add two cups of hot water. Use this to blot the stain.

Once the stain is removes blot the area with clean water to remove the solvent. Leave to dry.
