Showers seem to get dirty without us noticing. This hardly seems surprising when you realize we are cleaning ourselves in their every day. And of course the soap scum, shampoo, and general dirt will quickly accumulate on the tiles and grout. Mold and mildew will also accumulate on the grout if we don’t periodically remove it.
Soap scum is one of the worst things when cleaning. It leaves the surfaces sticky, so the dirt and grime is hard to remove. Using more soap and detergent only makes things worse. Vinegar will get rid of most soap scum.
Use a solution of equal parts vinegar and water for the shower. Put this in an old spray bottle and spray it on the tiles and grout. It will remove limescale and dirt.
Mold appears in grout. Use bleach to remove this. You can spray in on. Or if the mold is in corners you can soak a paper towel in bleach and leave it on the moldy spot for a few hours.
Wash the bleach away when the mold has died off.
Be sure to clean the silicon edge around the edges of all the tile surfaces.
These tend to get blocked, especially in areas with hard water. The minerals in the water leave deposits in the pipes and fixtures.
We can declog the shower-head with vinegar. Fill a plastic bag with vinegar and tie it so the shower-head is submerged in the vinegar. Leave this overnight. Then rinse in the morning.
Shower Curtain and Bathmat
These can generally go in the washing machine and be dried outside. Check the label.
Most showers have at least some glass surfaces. These tend to accumulate soap scum. Spray them with the water and vinegar solution. Then rinse with water and use a squeege to remove the water.
